I LOVE the Federation destroyer. I've used her to better effect than people expect. Watch out when all her movement is at the end of a tractor beam--she's up to something...

I always thought the Hermes class didn't have the hanging deflector dish, which was one of the ways of telling it apart from the Saladin class.

The main difference is that the Hermes is the "production" version whilst the Saladin is the "Pilot" version of the same ship. An in-universe explanation is that the Saladin is much more heavily armed but is much slower, the Hermes isn't really equipped for warfare but is really fast and manouverable.
