Everytime I see your renders of Enterprise D I am just awestruck. That is my favorite of all the iterations of the Enterprise. Easily the most gracefull of all. You keep making them, I'll keep faving and saving them!
Awesome, hey do you mind if I nerd out on you for a second? I am watching DS9 for the first time and noticed that the Defiant is considered a war ship, but in First Contact the Enterprise was like Uber Powerful, is the Soveriegn class a war ship class as well?
The defiant was originally designed for either the Borg or the Dominion invasions. I can't remember which. Basically, the difference between the Defiant class ships and the Sovereign class Enterprise is that the Defiant is all guns and engines. She comes in and does what needs to be done. Basically, like the Ghostbusters - We came, we saw, we kicked its ass. The Sovereign class are heavy cruisers/explorers, like the predecessors - the Galaxy class. The defiant has no frills, no luxuries...she's a gunboat, nothing else. So, yes, she's a warship. The current Enterprise's mission is much more complex. Her mission is the same as all the other Enterprises before her - to boldly go...etc...
But at the same time, the Enterprise can host diplomatic receptions, scientific research, kick ass and take names, and so forth. She has all the amenities and facilities for the various mission types.
There's a line in Star Trek Insurrection where Picard, on his way to a diplomatic reception, says, "Anyone remember when we used to be explorers?"
As for the Enterprise being uber-powerful, well, there's always a bigger fish. She went toe to toe against the Borg and survived, then later went toe to toe with the Reman warship Scimitar and all but got her metal clad ass kicked. The only way Picard was able to even begin to slow down the Scimitar was by point blank ramming her. He was outgunned and outclassed by a wide margin. The Scimitar was like the evil bastard love child of a union between the Defiant and the Enterprise and then hopped up on some serious steroids. As Picard said - "She's a predator." Then again, even the Death Star - both of them, were taken down by smaller ships, which proves the old adage of "its not the size of the dog in the fight that counts, its the size of the fight in the dog."
