In Photoshop, using a pre-rendered image of a phaser beam.

Nice...

I'm not too sure about the "pen and ink" style though. (Although it is quite nostalgic. :) )

Maybe something slightly more realistic?

You know what I love? How in the TOS (before remaster) the phasers were red and in the remastered they were blue.

They were either red or blue in TOS and blue only in TOS-R.
