Following the defeat in the Third Man-Kzin War, the Polaris is transferred to Starfleet duty as a planetary survey vessel. Ensign Charlotte Ainsworth joins the crew as the first (and only) science officer aboard. Wanting to visit his evacuated home planet before it is turned over to the Kzinti, Captain Metlesits sets the Polaris on a course of the planet Elizabethtown. Finding and bypassing a scrambler satellite in deep space, the Polaris receives signals from Elizabethtown, claiming that the Federation left the majority of the inhabitants behind.
